Be Careful What You Turn Down – How Unexpected Opportunities Unlock Leadership Growth

When Ego Says “No”

When I founded Muse Technologies, I was determined to do it my way.

After years as a CIO, I wanted my company to represent legacy, not labels. I didn’t want anyone to think I was becoming just another “speaker” or “leadership coach.”

I wanted real contracts. Real impact. Real work.

So I made a promise to myself:
❌ No coaching.
❌ No speaking engagements.
❌ No shortcuts.

And then God smiled — and gave me my first contract.
A coaching contract.

The Opportunity I Didn’t Want

I initially said no. I wasn’t interested. Coaching wasn’t the identity I wanted for Muse.

But the person offering it knew me well — and cleverly positioned it in a way that made me say yes.

That “yes” I didn’t plan on became one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.

That small coaching engagement blossomed into hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue — and more importantly, it reignited my sense of purpose.

The Lesson: Don’t Dismiss Small Assignments

The work I didn’t want to do became the work I was most anointed to do.

Here’s what that taught me:

  1. Sometimes your assignment doesn’t fit your title. It fits your calling.
  2. Your next-level paycheck may hide in something you think you’re “too experienced” for.
  3. Ego blinds you to divine detours.

God often wraps blessings in assignments that look beneath us — not to humble us, but to prepare us.

The Faith in “Yes”

When you say yes to something uncomfortable, you activate growth that logic can’t predict.

That’s how faith works in leadership — it often looks illogical before it becomes influential.

The Muse contract reminded me of this simple truth:
Obedience opens doors that ambition never will.

What Have You Been Resisting?

Maybe there’s an opportunity that feels beneath you — a collaboration, a small contract, or a side project that doesn’t fit your plan.

Before you dismiss it, ask yourself:

  • Is my ego saying no, or my spirit?
  • Is this “too small,” or just not shiny enough?
  • Could this be the seed for something bigger?

Final Thought

Saying yes doesn’t mean saying yes to everything — it means staying open to what’s aligned, not just what’s convenient.

Because sometimes the contract you resist is the one that launches your legacy.
